Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Barry Zito worked seven strong innings as the
San Francisco Giants knocked off the Chicago Cubs, 4-2, in the second of a
four-game set at Wrigley Field.
San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds, in one of the worst slumps of his career,
was scratched from the starting lineup, but he did make an appearance. He made
a pinch-hit appearance for Kevin Frandsen in the eighth, but lined out
to left field.
Bonds, who also sat out Monday's 3-2 loss with what is termed sore legs, is
hitless in his last 21 at-bats. He remains at 751 career homers, four shy of
Hank Aaron's all-time mark. Bonds hasn't homered since July 3 at Cincinnati.
The current 0-for-21 slump is just shy of Bonds' career-worst 0-for-23, set
during his rookie season in 1986. It's only the fourth time in his career that
he's gone hitless in five at-bats in consecutive games.
Randy Winn went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Omar Vizquel scored once and
drove in a run for the Giants, who snapped a five-game losing streak.
Zito (7-9) gave up just two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with eight
strikeouts.
Derrek Lee hit a solo home run while Ryan Theriot scored the other run for the
Cubs, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Sean Marshall started on the mound and gave up just two runs on five hits in
six innings of work. Carlos Marmol (2-1) was charged with the loss for giving
up two runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.
The Giants broke a 2-2 game in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Will Ohman issued a walk to Dave Roberts that brought home Fred Lewis. Michael
Wuertz then took the mound and gave up an infield single down the first-base
line to Vizquel that allowed Pedro Feliz to score for a 4-2 advantage.
Vinnie Chulk pitched a perfect eighth inning and Brad Hennessey retired three
straight batters after giving up a leadoff double in the ninth to pick up his
sixth save of the season.
The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a San Fran miscue. Theriot
started off the inning with a double to left. Mike Fontenot then laid down a
bunt to move Theroit up, but Rich Aurilia misplayed the ball and Theriot came
home.
The Giants took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Bengie Molina punched a single to
left to score Vizquel and, after Aurilia lined out, Feliz blasted a double to
left to score Winn.
Lee tied the game for Chicago in the sixth as he blasted a one-out solo home
run to make it a 2-2 game.
Game Notes
Despite the win, the Giants left 11 men on base...It was Lee's eighth home run
of the season...The Giants have won three of their last four against
Chicago...Attendance was 41,102.
