Miami, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rick Vanden Hurk tossed five scoreless innings
and Hanley Ramirez knocked in three runs, as the Florida Marlins blanked the
St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0, in the middle contest of a three-game set at
Dolphin Stadium.
Recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Albuquerque, Vanden Hurk (3-2)
scattered just five hits, walked three and fanned six in his
first major league appearance since he defeated Kansas City on June 16.
The outing marked the third time the 22-year-old Vanden Hurk has been called
up from the minors this season. This time, he's taking the place of the
injured Josh Johnson, who has been on the disabled list since July 5 with a
right forearm strain.
Justin Miller, Matt Lindstrom and Armando Benitez each tossed an inning of
relief, while Lee Gardner and Taylor Tankersley worked the ninth in the
combined shutout.
Ramirez had two hits - including a two-run homer - and also scored a run for
the Marlins, who have won three of four and six of their last nine games
overall.
Brad Thompson (6-4) allowed three runs and seven hits, with two walks and
three strikeouts over six innings for St. Louis, which had a modest two-game
winning streak snapped.
After leaving two runners on in the second inning, it was a base-running error
by Albert Pujols that kept St. Louis off the board in the third.
Adam Kennedy started the inning with a base hit, and a Skip Schumaker double
put runners at second and third with no outs. Pujols then ripped a hard line
drive off the glove of the shortstop Ramirez, but failed to break toward
first, even as the ball skipped away from the infielder.
Ramirez recovered and easily threw out Pujols, who never made it halfway down
the line. Chris Duncan was then intentionally walked, loading the bases,
before Scott Rolen went down swinging and Juan Encarnacion flied out to end
the inning.
Florida responded quickly, as Alfredo Amezaga led off the home half of the
frame with a single to right. Vanden Hurk moved him over with a bunt, and a
Ramirez double gave the Marlins a 1-0 edge.
The Marlins added two more in the fifth, as Joe Borchard singled and Ramirez
belted a 1-0 pitch over the scoreboard in left to make it 3-0.
An RBI single by Dan Uggla in the seventh capped the scoring.

Vanden Hurk lowered his ERA from 8.38 to 7.15...To make room on the roster,
the Marlins designated pitcher Wes Obermueller for assignment...St. Louis
has been shut out eight times this season...The Cardinals have not won three
games in a row since June 3-6, when they took one game from Houston and two
from Cincinnati...Attendance was just 12,475.
